I bought this radio as a inexpensive Go Kit radio for Emergency use and it fills this need very well.
The radio offers 7 Watts of power for when you need that little extra push to hit the repeater, a Weather Radio, and 200 memories to hold all the frequencies I could need.
Along with the included rechargeable battery pack I also purchased a 6-AA battery case as they can be much easier to find at times then a working power outlet and time to let the radio recharge. The BNC Antenna connector is nice and rugged and allows a large number of antenna options, I have extender cables, a long whip, a roll up J-Pole, and a mini mag mount all in the kit along with adapters to additional connector types. My only complaint is I keep breaking detachable microphones, my first one (a non Icom) that the cable cover frayed. I then purchased an official HM-158L and though I’m happy to say the cable is still intact the clip on the back snapped off and I have not found a way to repair it yet.
While the optional UT-118 Digital module allows the radio to be used on the new D-Star repeater systems I have to be honest and say I have no intention to purchase one at current pricing, I have trouble paying twice the cost of the radio for this option, especially considering the current lack of D-Star repeaters. I really think Icom needs to lower the price of it’s D-Star gear if it wants it to be more popular.
